Richard Mullender

Richard Mullender has more than 25 years experience working in the London Metropolitan Police, most recently as the former Lead Trainer at the National Crisis and Hostage Negotiation Unit at Scotland Yard.

Richard brings a unique breadth and depth of experience, having designed and run courses all over the world, developing the negotiation skills of officers for organisations that include the Metropolitan Police, the United Nations, the FBI, South Africa’s ‘Scorpions’ Unit, the Indian and the Maltese Secret Services.

In addition to extensive crisis negotiation field experience in the UK, Richard was also deployed to Afghanistan and has been active across a wide range of international negotiation assignments.

At Scotland Yard, he was responsible for designing and delivering the Yard’s flagship 2-week ‘National Negotiators Course’ for experienced crisis negotiators. He also designed the latest Advanced Interviewing course for detectives investigating all major offences, including murder, arson and terrorism.

Richard has extensive experience training senior professionals across the world, designing and delivering multi-day courses in the UAE, Qatar, Egypt, Kenya, South Africa, Singapore, USA, Kosovo and across Europe.

Outside the world of policing, Richard has delivered programmes for teams at Shell, BAE, IMI, Oracle, Cambridge University, BNP Paribas, SAS Software, the Tate Gallery, The Chartered Institute of Management Accountants. He has also delivered a succession of highly successful 4-day public courses for executives in the Gulf region over the past five years.

Richard was the subject of an article in the financial times and has appeared on BBC Radio 4. He is currently retained as an adviser to a new television series portraying hostage negotiations and murder investigations
