The ATC’s public sector news puts you in the picture of what’s new, noteworthy and…

Welcome to the ATC ISO Newsletter! In this newsletter, we focus on emerging ISO standards for AI, and the ATC community’s involvement in their development.
ATC Representative in ISO AI Committees
The ATC’s ISO representative Carina Balbo has recently joined the BSI’s ART/1 Committee for Artificial Intelligence, bringing the language services industry’s expertise to the development of global standards for AI. Through the BSI, Carina joins ISO and CEN Committees ISO/IEC/JTC 1/SC 42 and CEN/CENELC/JTC 21 for Artificial Intelligence, gathering around her a core group of language experts to inform the work.
Dataset Bias in AI: A Strategic Priority for LSCs
AI governance landscape is evolving rapidly. AI frameworks including the EU AI Act increasingly require transparency around data sources, documented bias mitigation strategies, human oversight mechanisms, and robust quality processes. For ATC members already operating within ISO-aligned frameworks, this shift represents an opportunity rather than a burden. Working on developing ISO standards for AI datasets and bias, Carina’s blog explains how dataset integrity and bias have moved from technical considerations to strategic imperatives for the language services industry.
ISO/IEC 42001 Artificial Intelligence Management Systems
The leading ISO standard for AI management and governance is ISO/IEC 42001:2023 which specifies requirements for establishing, implementing, maintaining, and continually improving an Artificial Intelligence Management System (AIMS). It is designed for organisations providing or using AI-based products or services, ensuring responsible development and use of AI systems.
Other ISO Standards for AI
“The potential benefits and risks of AI are formidable, for society as well as for companies. Standards that enhance transparency, data quality, and system reliability are a way to mitigate risks and maximize rewards. Incorporating desired societal and ethical outcomes based on comprehensive stakeholder inputs, they can help bridge gaps in regulation.” This is how ISO describes the driving forces behind its work on emerging ISO standards for AI, from guidance on risk management to testing AI systems.

Upcoming Webinar: Beyond ISO – ASTM Standards and Their Importance for the US Language Market
In this webinar, the EUATC – with the support of the ISO Secretariat – will be looking at the importance of the standards regime needed by the language industry to work successfully in the US market.
While ISO standards are often used globally for certification (e.g., ISO 17100), ASTM standards are highly influential in North America and frequently used by government agencies and procurement teams to establish, define, and measure quality in language services.
The webinar will focus on the work of ASTM International through its Committee F43 on Language Services and Products, which was formed in 2010 to develop voluntary consensus standards for translation, interpretation, and language training.
