ISO 18968: Translation-Oriented Writing
ISO/DIS 18968 Translation-oriented writing — Text production and text evaluation is a draft-stage requirements standard providing recommendations for the production and evaluation of technical texts intended for translation into other languages by means of human and/or machine translation – open for commenting in the UK with the BSI until 11 November 2025.
ISO/IEC 23859: Information technology — User interfaces — Requirements and recommendations on making written text easy to read and understand
ISO/IEC 23859 Information technology — User interfaces — Requirements and recommendations on making written text easy to read and understand, published in 2023, is a deceptively slim but strategically potent standard for the localisation and translation industry. This standard zeroes in on the clarity and accessibility of written text in user interfaces, regardless of language or delivery format. For LSPs, UX writers, and localisation strategists, it offers a fresh lens on how we evaluate and produce source content—especially in multilingual environments.
ISO 24896: Notation for Business Reporting
ISO/DIS 24896 Notation for Business Reporting proposes a standardised semantic notation for business reporting, such as covering written reports, presentations, and dashboards. It also proposes standardisation of visual language, defining how recurring elements and consistent design requirements should appear in business reports – open for commenting in the UK with the BSI until 6 December 2025.
What about other language services standards currently under development?
There are of course a number of language services standards currently under development or review with ISO Technical Committee 37 Language and terminology, and Sub-Committee 5 Translation, interpreting and related technology.
