The ATC is proud to announce a new Technology Partnership with Care to Translate whose mission is to solve language barriers in healthcare by enabling communication between healthcare staff and patients, no matter what language they speak.

At the heart of Care to Translate’s work is an innovative medical translation app which offers set ranges of medically verified translations in 45 languages, available 24/7 on a smart device or desktop computer. The app allows users on both sides of the healthcare conversation, staff as well as patients, to ask questions, give information, and provide instructions. The product is available for healthcare staff as well as for patients.

Maja Magnusson, Care to Translate’s Co-founder and CEO explains: “Our app is designed to complement, not replace, live interpreting. In a healthcare setting, there are many occasions where communication needs to take place across language barriers, but interpreting simply isn’t available, or isn’t an option. This is where Care to Translate adds a safe way to communicate.”

Care to Translate’s app helps to resolve some of the most pressing issues in multilingual healthcare settings where healthcare providers rely on multilingual staff and patients’ family members, or publicly-available machine translation apps, by providing a secure platform with medically curated and vetted set of translations for different healthcare settings.

Established in Sweden, Care to Translate partners with a range of healthcare and medical hospitals, organisations and institutions across the Nordic countries and the UK to:

  • Strengthen patient safety: Communicating safely and build an environment of trust. Giving the patient a better experience, and increase the quality of health care.
  • Save valuable time: Communicating when an interpreter is not present. Having more effective appointments, fewer cancellations, and taking care of more patients.
  • Reduce healthcare costs: The time saved will reduce waiting times, prevent misdiagnosis and avoid extended hospitalisations. Reducing healthcare costs for the department, clinic, and the whole region.

In the UK, Care to Translate has worked with NHS Royal United Hospitals Bath to bridge gaps in urgent or unscheduled situations, complementing the professional interpreting services provided for scheduled appointments.

The Care to Translate app is customisable with tailored playlists based on different communication scenarios and healthcare areas. Healthcare professionals and language service providers can manage users, edit playlists and get useful data on language statistics. New languages and phrases are continuously implemented, expanding usability.
