About the Association of Translation Companies

The Association of Translation Companies (ATC) is a trade association representing the interests of language service companies in the UK and internationally. It is the leading voice for companies operating in the UK’s language services industry.

Founded by British translation companies in 1976, the ATC provides authoritative advice about matters relating to multilingual communication, and working with legislators and other stakeholders, lobbies on behalf of its members, promoting the value of language services and language skills, translation and interpreting.

Our Advocacy Work

The ATC represents its members’ interests wherever decisions are made that affect their businesses and the wider language services industry.  For the ATC, advocacy means engaging with policymakers and regulators, building alliances across the business world, and using research to make the case for the value of language services. Above all, it means representing our members in a wide range of diverse arenas.

The majority of the ATC’s members are small and medium-sized enterprises. The ATC engages with the Department for Business and Trade to represent the interests of language service companies in business and trade policy, and works with the Small Business Commissioner on issues such as late payment and fair payment practices, which hit smaller companies hardest. Beyond SME legislation, the ATC works closely with the Fair Work Agency and supports its member companies to comply with employment business regulations.

Our Research

Language services play a critical role in supporting businesses’ export strategies and in enabling multilingual communication within public services. The ATC initiates and supports research on language services in the United Kingdom, the world’s second largest language services market.

Promoting the value of language services to the commercial and public sectors, the ATC’s research presents the wider economic case for language services in business and international trade, and highlights the role of translation and interpreting within the public sector.
