ITI – The Home of Language Professionals
In July 2026, the Institute of Translation & Interpreting (ITI) presented the ATC with the John Sykes Memorial Prize for Excellence to recognise the ATC’s ongoing hard work on behalf of and in support of language service companies and the wider language services industry, including its recent focus on commercial collaborations and other activities to promote the value of language services, language skills and translation and interpreting as professions to the business community and beyond.
Over the years, ITI and the ATC have built a strong collaboration with mutual support. ITI is a community of language professionals with a comprehensive CPD programme to support language specialists’ career development. The majority of ITI’s members work in commercial translation, covering a wide number of specialisms and language pairs, and work with both individual clients and LSPs. ITI Affiliate membership is a meaningful professional membership for project managers, terminologists and quality assurance officers, and freelancers may be interested in Associate or Qualified membership. Whatever stage of their career, ITI is there to support language professionals.
What are the benefits of joining ITI?
- A mark of quality — ITI membership signals compliance to recognised professional standards. Qualified Members (MITI or FITI) have passed a rigorous independent assessment of their translation or interpreting skills, giving clients confidence in the quality of their work.
- Listing in the ITI Directory — Qualified Members are listed in the ITI Directory, and publicly affiliated with a leading industry association.
- Use of ITI logos and designations — ITI members are entitled to use their membership grade logo and post-nominals (such as MITI or FITI) on their website, profiles and correspondence, adding credibility to their professional profile.
- Professional development — ITI members have access to a year-round programme of training and development, including free monthly webinars, paid-for workshops and on-demand learning courses, all of which contribute to CPD hours
- Networking — with 42 networks covering a wide range of languages, regions and specialisms, ITI offers opportunities for peer support, advice, social events and connections with fellow language professionals.
- Advocacy — ITI actively advocates for the language services profession with government, education and industry bodies, and works alongside other industry bodies — including the ATC — on projects and campaigns to raise the profile of the industry and the professionals within it.
- Code of Professional Conduct — ITI members are part of a community that holds itself to a recognised ethical framework, which members can point to as evidence of their professional standards when working with clients.
- ISO 17100 alignment — ITI Qualified Member status can contribute towards ISO 17100 compliance, the international standard for translation services, helping members demonstrate their credentials to clients who require it.
Who can join ITI?
ITI membership is open to a wide range of professionals connected to the language services industry — not just translators and interpreters — both in the UK and internationally. Around a fifth of ITI’s 2,400 members are based outside the UK, and ITI has a dedicated Network for international members, allowing them to engage with other language professionals from around the globe.
ITI membership categories are designed to support language professionals at every stage of their career, from students to Fellows, and ITI welcomes linguists, terminologists, quality assurance managers, project managers, academics and business owners. Find out more about Affiliate membership.
