The language services industry is navigating choppy waters, and the definition of how we define…

The ATC’s public sector news puts you in the picture of what’s new, noteworthy and interesting in the public sector space for translation and interpreting.
UK Companies’ Access to EU Tenders
UK-based companies do not have an automatic, guaranteed access to EU public procurement, but they can access EU tenders where specific EU institutions procure translation and interpreting for themselves. New ATC guidance clarifies UK-companies eligibility to EU tenders for different EU institutions.
ERA’s Impact on Language Service Companies
The Employment Rights Act 2025 includes a number of developments that may impact language service companies specifically.
- The new Fair Work Agency’s remit is to enforce labour market legislation and it has legal powers to investigate employers. The FWA’s continued position is that interpreting service providers operate as Employment Businesses, and are thus subject to relevant employment agency regulations.
- In 2027, the ERA will introduce new guaranteed working hours contract requirements. The ATC is contributing to Government consultations to ensure that new guaranteed hours rules do not adversely impact the language services industry.
Focus on Police Language Services
The National Police Framework Contract is managed by BlueLight Commercial, a procurement organisation established by the Home Office and the policing sector to centrally manage blue light organisations’ procurement. Its current 7-year DPS agreement for the provision of language services runs until September 2027, primarily supplied by ATC member companies, with the Metropolitan Police Language Services and Welsh Interpreting and Translation Services (WITS) supporting London and Central and South Wales.
