The ATC’s Member of the Month in March 2023 is BITS India, one of the founding members of the Indian association for language service companies, CITLoB, and a long-term partner for many ATC member companies.

We caught up with BITS India’s Founder Sandeep Nulkar, to talk about collaboration with UK-based companies, and CITLoB’s progressive work in developing the language services landscape in India.

ATC membership fuelling cross-border business

BITS India is one of the ATC’s longest-service non-UK member companies, and its Founder Sandeep Nulkar a familiar sight at the Language Industry Summit.

For Sandeep, the equation is a simple one, engagement with language service companies in their own market fosters productive collaborations and business relationships.

“The UK has always been an important market for us, and we have long been the preferred supplier for Indian languages to UK member companies. Business is built on trust, especially across borders and continents. Being an ATC member amongst other member companies means that when we have business conversations, they are with a view to build long-lasting relationships that add value to both parties,” Sandeep explains.

Driving change and best practice in India

In 2019, Sandeep founded CITLoB, the Confederation of Interpreting, Translation and Localisation Businesses, together with colleagues from other leading language service companies Braahmam, Crystal Hues, Fidel Softech and VERNAC.

“The Indian language services market is incredibly dynamic and varied, from global language service companies to small local businesses,” says Sandeep. “With CITLoB, we wanted to build an association that would bring together all language industry stakeholders in India, and to partner with stakeholders across the world, with the aim of promoting best practices, and improving cooperation – learning, sharing and progressing together.

Today, CITLoB has over 200 members including the country’s leading language service companies, and a growing cohort of freelance linguists.

New solutions, new frontiers

In its 30 years of trading BITS has metamorphosed from a traditional translation services company into a full-service brand communication company that offers content, design and digital marketing services.

“We work with some of the most exciting brands active in the Indian market, helping them solve their brand communication puzzle one step at a time,” Sandeep says.

“But that doesn’t mean that we have forgotten our language service company partners. It means that we are able to work with them even more collaboratively, and to open up opportunities in the continuously growing Indian market for their clients. What I’m also especially interested in is working with ATC member companies around M&A, scoping out and establishing potential connections across
